When does this become scientism, a system of belief rather than science, a system of rational inquiry?

Perhaps there really is an impending apocalypse. Thus far doomsaying hasn't panned out. Doomsday fears have been used to rationalize financial schemes and power grabs. But then, perhaps this time is different.
