Basically the commercial version was initially called "FreeNAS Pro" but because of the "Free" in the name it was not treated seriously in the enterprise, so it was renamed to "TrueNAS". So after the merge, they still don't want to use word "free" so they took the commercial name and added "Core" to it.
People are posting that it is a great news that they unify for the consumer. I believe at best it is a neutral thing for the consumer, the unification is great for iXSystems, because it will reduce their overhead of maintaining two products separately.
