I'm considering switching from a QNAP NAS that reaches end of support to FreeNAS. It looks like a well thought out package. What are the drawbacks in your opinion?
Hardware support can be tricky and you need to make sure your mobo supports FreeBSD. The community has the angry sys admin mentality but they generally just want to help you build a robust system. Gotta do it their way. You can build your own which is what I did. i3/Super micro mobo/ECC Memory/6 WD red drives.
I’m not really sold on their jails (VMs). Personally I feel more comfortable on Linux but ZFS and the features that come out of the box with FreeNAS won me over. I’ve looked at Open Media Vault (Debian based) a little bit but not interested in moving data.
