I have always assumed many programmers are terrible at sports in general so they turn programming into this weird sport of who can be the Cristiano Ronaldo of programming.
That's a pretty unfair way to put it. People that do "too much" to try to impress their collegues or themselves exist everywhere. You can see it in some people's code, you can see it in the way some people dress, you can see it in some powerpoint presentations, you can see it in sports.
This "king of the castle" is probably most important, at least for middle management. To paraphrase Eric Blair, How to assert one's superiority over another if not to make them suffer?
I mean obviously when people say that it is a rhetorical devise to win an argument. I mean the people saying that are saying it exactly because it is bullshit. It is hard to argue against exactly because it is such bullshit.
At this point though we need to have entire new branch of the military. Otherwise, I just don't see how we are taking this serious enough.

It is just incredible how we are always fighting the last war. From 9/11, instead of learning we need to constantly stay on top of a shifting battlefield we learned to fight Islamic terrorism. Not good.
I think you should just view it like a podcast or music video. You have full control over the presentation. I wouldn't doubt there is a huge bias in interviews towards the more aesthetically pleasing video.
